My name is Katie. I am 14 years old, turning 15 in July. I am from South Korea, and I am currently living in Warsaw. I have lived in the States for a year or two when I was in kindergarten. I moved from Seoul to Warsaw in 2005. It was a really cold winter and I can still remember the snow. One of my favorite things to do is to play the piano. Recently, after school I always sit in front of the piano and practice. I can also play the flute and the violin, however piano is the instrument that I love the most. My other hobby is playing sports. I love sports such as soccer, softball, horse-back riding, golf basketball, hockey, swimming, tennis, hiking, and lots more. I am so excited about the spring sports starting. Also, as the weather gets better I'm excited to start horse-back riding again in the sun. Even though I like many sports, I don't enjoy running. This might sound irony since I enjoy sports that requires heavy running, however I hate running when not used in a sport. Out of all my favorites, I have to say that cows are the biggest favorite that I'm attached too. After a cow was named after me on my grandfather's farm, I was attached to cows very much. My positive qualities are I never find myself sad. Whenever I have troubles to go through, I shake it off easily and start fresh. I also think I can work cooperatively with others which is really important now days, since team work is required a lot. Also it helps a lot in team sports as well. Some negative qualities of myself is not organizing my time, money and my room. I am very weak at controlling and diving up my time. Right now, as I'm typing it took me a lot of self control to sit on my desk to finish this. Every day I get caught up with what I was doing that day and forget about my homework. But I still do my homework, it is just that I have to go to bed really late which is not good at all. I am trying to fix myself with this and I can see myself improving, however I need a lot more of improvement. I try to spend my money on things that I necessarily need. Most times, I end up buying clothes which I really don't need that much of. I also buy some electronics and other cool things that I will get bored easily of. I can't believe I wasted so much money on iPods when I could have bought one and donated all to a charity. After realizing that I was spending a lot of unnecessarily money, my mom and I decided to donate monthly to a charity. Every month, around $50 are pulled off my bank account on it's own and it is donated to the charity. Unless, I run out of money for myself, I will not stop this service of donating money, I know it is a small amount. However, it is better than nothing, also if I add up $50 for a year it makes $600 which will help the needy some how.
Living in Poland for many years I feel like I became a better person. In 5th grade I met a friend, just a normal classmate that I could have passed by. However, as I got to know her my personality changed very much. After hanging out with her I got many compliments about my personality and how it changed. One of my most special friend is Yuma. I have spent 4 years with her, and now she had moved away to Japan. I'm planning to visit her this summer, which I am very excited about. I thank her so much for making me into someone that I am proud of today. After Yuma left, I found someone that could be another really good friend. For the past 4 years in Poland, I hardly made friends with people from my country, Korea. For some reasons, I felt more attached to Polish people and my best friend. After she left, I found myself a lot more attached to my ethnic friends, Koreans. As I have lived now for almost 15 years, I believe that without friends I will not be able to survive. They are the people that I can tell everything to, friends are the ones that will love me for who I am, not what I'm trying to be. They are the ones that will laugh when you fall, but the only one that will help you up. They will be the ones that are laughing at your clothes when they are ugly, but let you borrow clothes. I love my friends, all my past friends, and all the ones that are coming to be. Due to all the amazing friends I have I believe that I am socially very healthy.
To keep my body healthy, I do sports regularly. In fall, I play soccer in the MS girl's soccer team. I love playing soccer and soccer is one of my favorite sports. I also love watching soccer and my favorite team is Manchester United. In the winter, I do many sports. I do some basketball, I go running in Powsin and also I swim. In the spring, for the last 3 years I haven't had P.E because of health. Since, I want to maintain my health I play softball on the MS girls' softball team. I have traveled Bucharest last year and it was a lot of fun. In order to keep all of my families health we go on a walk to Powsin every week after church. Often my dad, my brother and I go to the swimming pool together or go play tennis. Since all of our families enjoy golfing we go to the country side in Poland to play golf few times a month. When the weather gets better my brother and I will go back to horse back riding. I have been learning to ride on horses since 3rd grade and I love it so much. After cow and elephant horses are my 3rd favorite animal. If I get a chance in Korea, I would like to adopt a horse and train it to be mine. I think I am keeping myself pretty healthy, if I just maintain myself this way I think I will be able to live a healthy life.
In order to reach my goal, I was taught that I should have someone to talk to. Someone that can close their eyes for whatever mistakes I have made, someone that can clap for my success and someone that will lead me to the right path. To be spiritually healthy I go to church every Sunday. Occasionally, I have a lot of homework or sometimes I wake up late to go to church, on those days I feel bad but I don't go to church. I think I should fix this since church is the only spiritually thing I do in the week. I should participate more and feel more attached to God. I'm also thankful that there is a big Korean community here, so I can go to a Korean church. Korean church seems a lot more welcoming to me because of the lang
In order to keep my intellectual health, I try my hard in school. One of my goals for this trimester is to say that I tried to best and the fullest this trimester. I think I can improve a lot more and become a better student. However, to keep myself smart I have a math tutor twice a week. She doesn't help me with my homework however, she teaches whatever is going on in the Korean math program. Since I'm going back soon, I have to start getting used to the Korean program. Also this summer I was accepted to go the Center for Talented Youth, CTY camp. I was recommended to try applying for the course, so I took the SATs and I made it through the cut. I'm traveling to Pennsylvania, USA for this in the summer. Since I'm going there with a friend of mine I'm really excited. Also I'm going to Korea after the camp to take math courses and SAT courses. Every year I have been traveling to Korea in the summer to take lessons. It was very tiring and hard, probably I did the most work in the summer than any time of the year. However, after every summers I feel like I achieved a lot more and I feel a lot more healthier intellectually.
For emotional health, I think it is just my personality that helps me be emotionally healthy.I'm the kind of the person that can shake off mistakes easily, and walk away smiling. However, that doesn't mean that I giveup easily. I am very proud of my optimistic personality.Too happy can't be worse than being pessimistic.
The risks tat my friends a I should face are mostly health risks and risk of maintaining their intellectual helath. Firstly, one of the most common pressure can be pressured by your friends or even people from your school that are older than you. These include getting into drugs, smoking cigarettes and most commonly drinking alcohol. All of these and even other kinds can change your personality greatly, but not only it will make your body malfunction. The Biggest lie of the teen years: “Everybody is doing it.” Looking at many statistics it was proven that everybody is not doing it. Just politely refuse whatever you were asked to do. I think I will be able to do that well because, I can clearly tell apart what I don't like and what I do. Also, since I know how to refuse politely, I don't think I will go through much mess with that.
For the upcoming months I would like to set a few goals. One of them will be to make the softball team. I enjoyed playing softball, and last year in Bucharest it was a lot of fun. I would like to feel the same experience again in Prague this year. I'm really excited about softball and I would love to make the team. One of my goals that was never possible to achieve was to sleep before midnight. I have a lots of Korean work to do since, I'm going back soon. Because of this, I have never slept before midnight in the past 2 years. I usually go to sleep around 1, which makes my body tired during school and I end up not concentrated during class, which is a double whammy, since I'm tired and I'm lacking my concentration during class. I will not set the goal of sleeping before midnight however I will try to get that sleep in the weekend or sometime to keep all my energy to the fullest. I know that if I sleep for few hours straight in the weekend it will not be as healthy as sleeping daily, however I consider that it is better than nothing. My academics goals would be to turn all my assignments on time. I am getting better on this as time passes, but in order to get a good grade in all classes I think I should turn in all my assignments on time for sure. To maintain my spiritual health, I'm going to make a promise to myself and to God that I will attend church every week. Even if I am sleepy, I will pop out of my bed and get in the car for church. One of my most important goal is to not make excuses for what I have done wrong. I will accept my mistake and try to fix it as soon as possible.
